Darjeeling is the queen of hill stations in India



Darjeeling is a district of West Bengal and is very famous as a Hill Station. It is situated at an altitude of 2050 m. Main Languages spoken here are Nepali, Bengali, Hindi and English. The name, Darjeeling is supposed to be derived from the word Dorjeeling, meaning 'the place of Dorjee'. Dorjee is the majestic thunderbolt which belongs to the Lamaist religion. According to some it belongs to the Lord Indra. 
Darjeeling was under the rule of the king of Sikkim until the early 18th century. Later the area was annexed by the Gorkhas, who eventually lost it to the British. The place was used by the British to escape the heat of the plains. They developed it area as a hill station and promoted tea plantations. Today, Darjeeling is well known for its tea estates and eco-tourism. The economy of Darjeeling revolves around Timber, tea, and tourism. Apart from the tea plantations, Oranges and cardamom are also available in plenty. Darjeeling is also a popular destination for Bollywood and Bengali film shooting.
